Mark Hancock is an artist, musician and linguist.
His subjects range widely, from urban street scenes to natural landscapes and portraits.
The style is realistic and quietly atmospheric.
As an artist, I work mainly in oils on canvas in a realistic style. For me, painting is a way of giving expression to my appreciation of the things that I see around me. These may be urban street scenes, natural landscapes, and people. I tend to prefer scenes which might easily go unnoticed, rather than traditionally picturesque views. This reflects my belief that beauty, strangeness and mystery can be found in what people might consider ‘ordinary’; things we tend to pass by without giving much attention to.
My aim is to explore and share. I normally work from photos which I have taken, which means that in effect, photography is an important stage in my artistic process, equally as important as the application of paint to canvas. Taking up a brush is the culmination, not the start.
