From the corner of my eye

Ferreteria Ballesteros, Madrid

In our neighbourhood in Madrid, the streets were straight canyons, seven or eight stories deep. Really hard to frame a good view. If you wanted a bit of sky, you’d have to take the long view down the road, which was a long tedious perspective all the way to a vanishing point. I decided it was better to look ‘out of the corner of my eye’, with a flat perspective straight into the line of parked cars and shop fronts, with a passing person for narrative interest. Add some sidelight from a morning sun and some gleaming stainless steel shutters, and the recipe is complete!
