In Edward Hopper’s lighthouse, our viewpoint is in the shadow of a hill, but we know there’s a sun out there because the lighthouse is bathed in its light. We can see the sun, but indirectly, like seeing around a corner, and I find that fascinating in the picture. Which is probably why this view in Chester caught my eye. The dying sun of the evening is so strongly implied in the intense orange of the brickwork and the shadows of the window frames on the curtains beyond.
