Three Worlds

Penny Lane Chippy

I loved Escher’s etching of a fish pond with this title. The three worlds were the fish below the water’s surface, the dead leaves floating on the water, and then the reflection in the water of the trees and sky. There’s something of that going on in this Liverpool scene, with the counter beyond the glass of the chippy window, the wall and window of the outside of the building, and then the reflection in the glass of some trees in the street behind our view point. The picture’s mostly a flat perspective, but there’s plenty of depth in it too!
