As optical illusions go, seeing the light is one of my favourites. The objective is that the picture should actually seem to emit light, rather than merely depict it. And you don’t even need to plug it in! Maybe that’s why I like the painter Joaquim Sorolla so much – not for nothing was he known as ‘the painter of light’. His home was right here in the city shown in this painting, which shows the local posh ladies at a flower kiosk in Madrid at dusk.
